I hope that everyone is doing well. God is very good. I just got back from Alabama where myself and 15 other brothers and priests had a weekend at a lake house that is owned by a family friend of ours. The house had a beautiful view of Lake Martin. On Saturday I got to ride a jet ski for the first time in my life. These jet skis went 0-60mph in 8 seconds. It was quite a rush. As well I got to go cliff jumping, wake boarding, and knee boarding. Wow what a dream come true! God is so good to you when you follow his will in your life. He truly does reward those who follow him with 100 fold in this life and in the next. Pray for me!

On April 25, 1951, a few months after I turned 14, I entered the Benedictine Abbey in Manila where I lived the monastic life up to the age of 31. I was ordained by Rufino Cardinal Santos in 1960. After Vatican II, I served parishioners in Laguna, Bataan, Pampanga, Caloocan and Bulacan (1967-1974).

Around this time, a psychologist, Fr. Francis Parisi, SJ, administered psychological tests to priests and advised many, including me, to leave the priesthood. He said I was not happy. So, my Benedictine superior had me laicized by Pope Paul VI on Dec. 30, 1974. The bishops later stopped the tests.

I worked as a research assistant at the Ateneo de Manila University and as a cataloguer at the National Archives. I taught in schools in Manila, Pampanga and Baguio.

On Dec. 20, 1984, upon the petition of Tarlac Bishop Jesus Sison, Pope John Paul II reinstated me into the clergy, specifically for Tarlac. The Latin document was signed by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now PopeBenedict XVI).

I served as a priest in Tarlac for six years and six months. Then, with the permission of Bishop Florentino Cinense, the successor of Bishop Sison, I worked as a priest abroad (1991-1994) in the dioceses of Nelson and Kamloops, Canada; San Francisco, California; and San Angelo, Texas. I was the priest-administrator of St. Charles Parish in Eden from July 1, 1993 to March 23, 1994.

In April 1994, I came back to Tarlac, where I resumed my priestly ministry. But Bishop Cinense showed, by the way he treated me, that he did not like me personally.

In 1996, I sold our small family plot in Angeles and bought a lot in St. Dominic’s Subdivision in Tarlac. I was 59 and planned to spend the rest of my life and ministry there.

Bishop Cinense did not like that. One day, he asked me to stop saying Mass there which I regularly said and, instead, to take over Masses in another area. But since there were already priests assigned to those areas, I requested him to put in writing what he wanted me to do to avoid misunderstanding with those priests. But he evaded me.

In protest, I joined the Baptists of Tarlac. “Good riddance,” Bishop Cinense said, as I learned from friends.

I stayed with the Baptists for four months. Then, I went to Angeles, where I taught in two schools and, later, worked in the Rizal Library of the Ateneo, and did not perform any priestly function (1996-2000).

From December 2000 to March 2005, I served as a guest priest in the diocese of Alaminos. But, without my knowledge and consent, Bishop Cinense and Alaminos Bishop Jesus Cabrera excardinated me from Tarlac and incardinated me in Alaminos. According to Archbishop Oscar Cruz, Canon Law gives bishops the right to do so and Canon Law cancels my human rights.

Bishop Cinense knows that my being incardinated in Tarlac obliges him to look after my own welfare in my old age, just like Fr. Bienvenido Mapili and Fr. Hermogenes de Vera. He excluded our names from the 2010-2011 edition of the Catholic Directory of the Philippines, while other bishops included their own retired priests there.

In his 23 years as bishop of Tarlac, Bishop Cinense did not build even just a modest dwelling for his old priests, while other bishops did so for their own priests. And when he retires, a beautiful house is waiting for him in Baguio.

In 2003, I told Bishop Cabrera that I wanted to retire in my hometown of Angeles. He started pressuring me to stay in the retirement house which he was building in Alaminos. He repeatedly asked me to give him the addresses and telephone numbers of my brothers and sisters who live in the United States and Canada, but I did not give them to him.

In March 2005, I requested Bishop Cinense to recommend me to be a guest priest in my home province of Pampanga. He told me: “I cannot recommend you because, according to a letter of Jose Cardinal Sanchez, I am no longer your bishop.” He refused to show the letter to me because, he said, it was a “bishop-to-bishop communication.” When Cardinal Sanchez came back to the Philippines in 2011, I asked him about this but received no reply.

Since August 2005, I have been a guest priest in Pampanga, my role being as an occasional backup (substitute/assistant) of young priests in saying Mass, hearing confession and answering sick calls. I am also revising and updating my 1997 autobiography titled “And God Brought Me to Eden.”

Once a day, I face the curtain that stands between the dimension of time, where I am, and the dimension of eternity, where Jesus is. The curtain is transparent, so I see Jesus clearly. The curtain is so thin that Jesus is just right in front of me. We communicate without words.

Someday, Jesus will tell me to step from where I am to where He is, passing through this curtain. Then, I will say forever and ever: “And God brought me to Eden.”

2 Legionary Priests to Madison Diocese, Wisc

Father Cliff Ermatinger had always wanted to be a Catholic priest, but he'd begun to doubt the path he'd taken, through the order known as the Legionaries of Christ.

Then, last year, Legion leaders and the Vatican all but confirmed what had been rumored for decades: that the Legion's late founder had lived a double life as a philandering husband and notorious pedophile.

Ermatinger knew then it was time to go.

"As soon as I knew the truth, I knew what I had to do," said Ermatinger, who took over this week as pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Milwaukee's south side. "It was like a light went on, and I just started preparing myself."

Ermatinger, 46, is one of two Legionaries who have asked to shift their affiliation to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Father Robert Weighner, 47, starts his new post at St. Anne's Parish in Pleasant Prairie on Monday.

The men, both of whom are in a three-year discernment process required to leave an order, are thought to be the first Legionaries to work in the archdiocese.

"They're coming at the invitation . . . of Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki," archdiocese spokeswoman Julie Wolf said in an e-mail. "He knows them both and feels like they would be an asset to the archdiocese."

The Legionaries of Christ, one of the wealthiest and most influential orders in the Catholic Church, has been rocked in recent years by revelations that its founder, the late Marcial Maciel Degollado, had fathered several children by at least two women and molested young seminarians over decades.

Maciel, who died in 2008, was banned from public ministry in 2006, but it wasn't until this year that the Vatican fully acknowledged his sins, issuing a statement saying he had committed "true crimes" and condemning him as immoral and devoid of scruples and "authentic religious feeling."

Dozens of Legion priests have moved to leave the order in the year since the Vatican launched a sweeping investigation of Maciel and the Legion, said Jack Keogh, a former priest who recounts 20 years in the order in his memoir, "Driving Straight on Crooked Lines."

"Many, especially younger American recruits, resent the fact that the Vatican and their superiors hid the truth about Maciel from the rank and file for so long," he said.

Weighner and Ermatinger, both of whom spent two decades in the Legion in posts around the world, said the revelations affected their decisions to leave. However, both said they'd been contemplating diocesan life for some time.

Founded by Maciel in Mexico 1941, the conservative Legion had drawn a worldwide following with as many as 800 priests, 2,500 seminarians, and 70,000 in its lay organization, Regnum Christi, according to some estimates. Its assets have been estimated at more than $33 billion.

Allegations of abuse had dogged Maciel for years, but he avoided Vatican scrutiny, according to some news accounts, by plying key cardinals with gifts and money.

Derided by some as a cult, the order has been described as strict and secretive. It's been banned from some U.S. dioceses and barred from working with minors in at least one other because of its persuasive methods of attracting young recruits.

Both Ermatinger and Weighner joined the Legion as young men in their 20s.

"I was drawn by the mission and formation, the stress on spiritual growth and study," said Ermatinger, a Chicago native who was a student of Listecki's when he taught at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary.

Ermatinger, who speaks six languages and has authored books on spirituality, hesitated when asked whether he considered the order cultlike.

"I didn't know any other religious life," he said. "I knew there were orders with very strict rules. . . . It's not like it's a shock."

Ermatinger spent the past year at a Chicago parish and sought out Milwaukee, he said, because he has family here. Weighner spent a year in the Diocese of La Crosse, where Listecki was bishop before coming to Milwaukee in January.

Ermatinger said he has no regrets about joining the Legion, or leaving it.

"There are a lot of good people there, they love our lord and they really want to serve him," he said.

"But vocation is such an intimate question. At the end of the day, it comes down to the question: What is your will for me?

"And that's something nobody can answer for you. It's something each one of us has to figure out on our own."

Will the "Dissidents" get the boot?

Will the dissidents aluded to by Cardinal De Paolis be allowed to stay and Reform the Legion from the Inside?

Sandro Magister wrote recently on his blog Chiesa:

But even more disappointing for those who expected clearer and more rapid decisions from Cardinal De Paolis was the closed door speech he gave on July 2 at the general headquarters of the Legionaries.

In sketching a summary of his first year as commissioner of the Legion, De Paolis aimed his most severe criticisms at a few internal opponents, referred to as "dissidents," accused of sowing disobedience to the superiors and mistrust and discord among the confreres.

In reality, these "dissidents" are few in number and have a modest following, held together through e-mail.

Some of them teach in the faculties of bioethics and philosophy of the pontifical university "Regina Apostolorum." The most prominent are the professors Victor Pajares, Spanish, dean of the school of bioethics, Cristián Borgoño Barros, Chilean, and Alfonso Aguilar, Spanish.

Another circle of opponents implicitly put under accusation by Cardinal De Paolis is the one connected to the extremely wealthy Oriol Muñoz family in Spain. They are four brothers: Santiago, Ignacio, Alfonso, and Juan Pedro, all priests who have left the Legion, one after another, in recent months. One of their sisters, Malen, is still the assistant of director general Corcuera for consecrated virgins. About sixty Legionaries and former Legionaries have coagulated around the Oriol brothers, centered in Cordoba. But according to what they say and write, they seem to be creating not a renewed Legion, but yet another group of devotees to the Madonna of Medjugorje.

In attacking the "dissidents" shortly before removing Garza from the cockpit, Cardinal De Paolis made an astute move. The message that emerged from this is that Garza's ouster was an autonomous decision of himself and the Vatican authorities, not a concession to confused grassroots pressure.

Thy Kingdom Come!

Dear Regnum Christi Members in Atlanta,

As we begin summer vacation, I would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on important developments within the Legionaries of Christ community in the Atlanta area. As we near the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord, I would like to highlight a fundamental truth of our faith: God’s Providential love for us. We are in His hands. We are under His providential care. And we are all being led by Him in mysterious ways to fulfill our lives as sons and daughters of God, created in His image.

First of all, you may have heard about three Legionaries who have been serving in Atlanta who have asked for time to discern their possible future in the diocesan priesthood. They are Fr Paul Moreau, Fr Todd Belardi and Fr John Donahue. As Superior of the Spalding community where they resided, I want to make sure you are aware of their decisions.

We have offered our full support to our brothers as they have each discerned their future in the Legion during this past year. As Fr Paul Moreau wrote in his recent letter to all of you, he will remain in the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Fr Todd Belardi will return to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee where he and his family are from. Fr John Donahue will be doing the same, residing in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

While I am sad to see these fine men leave our community, I am truly happy for them, because they are discerning their futures in a spirit of prayer, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Along with all Legionaries, I thank them for their dedicated work throughout the years. They are great priests. They are our brothers in Christ. We will continue to pray for them and support them in every way possible.

Second, and in anticipation of concerns you may have regarding our work in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, I assure you that we will continue to provide our priestly support in Atlanta. Legionary priests will arrive to fill the vacancies left by the priests who are departing and the other Legionaries currently working in Atlanta will remain. If there are changes in this regard I will let you know.

Third, I give my own testimony that I believe represents many other Legionaries remaining in Atlanta. Despite the difficulties of the past few years, we consider it a call and a privilege to serve the Church in our Congregation during this time of renewal. The Visitation from the Holy See concluded a year ago and, since then, we have benefited greatly from the clear direction given by Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, C.S. as delegate of Pope Benedict XVI. It is a great consolation to know that we are guided by direct representatives of the Holy Father.

You may know that, as a Congregation, one of our primary objectives for the next three years is the review and renewal of our Constitutions. In furtherance of this objective, all Legionaries in Atlanta meet monthly to review our spirituality and Constitutions and propose changes that we see necessary. The meetings have helped strengthen us individually and as a community, and we can sense God’s providence at work.

During this time of renewal, we remain dedicated to our mission of serving the Church and serving you the members of the Regnum Christi Movement.

The blogger's use of the word "abandon" is intentional; it was the word Fr Maciel used when he tried to instill into us never to leave the Legion, never to "abandon our God-given vocation from all eternity to be called to the Legion of Christ". It takes some theological and faith readjustments in our interior as one summons the courage to leave.

But the change can be growthful:
a new vision of oneself: no longer a clone of Maciel
a new vision of the priesthood: it is a personal committment to Jesus
a new vision of the Legion: it is just one -quite flawed- part of the Church, no longer the Jesuits new and improved
a humbling experience: no more songs of glory about the Legion and the Regnum created by Marcial Maciel

Five Questions to Ask Before You Join a Personal Growth Group, Church or Spiritual Teacher

Do you know when you’re being manipulated or coerced? Unfortunately there are those who will deliberately prey on those of us who are seeking answers and guidance in life. When we are seeking answers, often our hearts and minds are a bit more open, and therefore a bit more susceptible to manipulation. I offer these questions as a way for you to take a measured assessment of any teaching or group that you are attracted to. I wish I had known to ask myself these questions before I joined a meditation group that turned out to be a cult.
1. Do the answers that are being provided by the group or the teacher seem too easy and/or too all-encompassing? Is what is being offered a panacea to ALL your problems? Life is never that simple; no once can make good on a promise of a one-stop solution.

2. Is there a sense of urgency that prevails in the group or that is layered into the decisions you’re being asked to make? In cults and/or coercive situations this is done purposefully so that you don’t have time to consider the downside or the arguments against joining. Urgency encourages us to ignore our normal decision-making processes and our intuition about the danger in a situation.
3. Do you have any intuitive heebie jeebies? Any red flags? Is your body expressing discomfort with the situation while your head/logic tries to talk you out of that? Your body always knows the truth. Don’t ignore it.

4. Does the intimacy in the situation move along too quickly? Is the teacher or leader a little too eager to like you and praise you and become your new BFF? Do you feel extremely flattered? This is seduction and a sure sign of coercive behaviour.

5. Are you in a time of transition or depression? It is more difficult to be skeptical and analytical at these times in life. Any time you’re in a major period of transition or feeling depressed, make a point to avoid big decisions and committing yourself to groups or individuals.

Two Bonus Questions

6. Are you being told, subtly or otherwise, that your life will be harmed if you don’t go along with what’s being offered? As though the group/leader/teacher knows better for you than you know for yourself. This is never possible. You always know what’s best for you.

7. Are you being asked to reserve judgment about morally or ethically questionable behaviours or situations in the group? Or do you find yourself telling yourself to reserve judgment? “This crazy behaviour will make sense when I’m more spiritual or educated or know more about how the group works.” If a situation seems wrong at the time, knowing more won’t explain that, you will only be convinced to ignore your initial hesitation.

Muy estimadas en Cristo:

Antes de todo, les mando un saludo lleno de afecto y gratitud por todo lo que recibí de ustedes durante mi paso por la vida consagrada en el Movimiento Regnum Christi. Todavía ahora sigo en contacto con muchas de ustedes con las que tengo una verdadera amistad y con las que comparto los grandes ideales que han alimentado mi vida.

Me he permitido escribirles estas líneas ante las informaciones que ya circulan entre ustedes sobre el libro “El Reino de Marcial Maciel” que acabo de escribir y próximamente estará a la venta en las librerías.

Les aseguro, contra lo que se está diciendo en algunos equipos, que el libro no nace del resentimiento porque no hay tal, sino de mi compromiso con la verdad y con ustedes. Lo he hecho con todo el amor cristiano y el respeto a la verdad que ustedes se merecen, y lo pondré en sus manos para ofrecerles un conocimiento informado de los hechos, con el fin de que juntos podamos buscar lo que el Señor quiere de nosotros en la renovación del Movimiento Regnum Christi por encima de componendas y ficciones.

He evitado cualquier dato morboso o dañino para alguien y sólo he recogido testimonios seguros y verificados. Desgraciadamente, he tenido que señalar cosas negativas, pero verán que no me deleito en ellas, sino que las señalo como elementos que tenemos que superar y que estoy convencida de que podemos superar.

En el libro, he recogido muchos testimonios dolorosos de personas queridas y cercanas porque me parecía que eso ayuda a tener un punto de vista completo. Lejos de las visiones idílicas o utópicas en las que vivimos. He respetado el anonimato de quién me ha pedido que lo mantuviera y he tratado de ser siempre sincera en la exposición de lo que pienso. Puedo tener muchos errores, como todos los seres humanos, y seguramente ustedes los irán descubriendo, pero les aseguro que he investigado y comprobado todas las afirmaciones que hago, siempre asesorada por hombres y mujeres de Iglesia especialistas en los distintos temas que se abordan. Pido perdón desde ahora a aquellas que puedan sentirse ofendidas o afectadas. No era mi propósito hacer daño a nadie.

We all learned that the process of foundation had been fraught with complications and opposition, and only succeeded because of the persistence and ingenuity of the founder, Marcial Maciel, and his fidelity to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit. Little did we suspect just how complicated and obscure that process was. Over the past few years we have learned of a variety of abuses and transgressions on the part of the founder – dating back to the foundation and probably before – that force a reexamination and reevaluation of the facts, motivations, and results of the Legion’s 70 year history, and of its current practices, rules and leadership.

My own reflections and prayers on these revelations helped me to the conclusion that God no longer wants me to be a part of the Legion. However, the Vatican has invested important resources in trying to help the Legion overcome this crisis. While there must be some bad apples (as there are in any organization, and they could not have gotten into this mess without the founder having some accomplices), all the Legionaries I know well are talented, well-intentioned men whom I love and respect, and who have the desire to make whatever changes are needed to continue serving God through the Legion’s charism (although the exact nature of the charism is itself a topic of some debate right now). They need help to see clearly and judge correctly, with a healthy distance from the distorted views and habits of thought and behavior that have their origin in the profoundly disturbed psychology of the founder. There is significant good in the Legion, and it would be a tragedy to lose that good in the murky and pervasive bathwater that desperately needs to be flushed out.

So today, I’d like to ask anyone who reads this, to pray please for the Legionaries of Christ and members of their affiliated Regnum Christi lay movement. May this 70th anniversary of foundation mark a turning point in this crisis. Under the guidance of the Pope and his representatives, may they come to a clear and objective understanding of what comes from God and what does not, so they can leave the tragedy of the Legion’s past behind, make reparation where needed, and serve the Church in justice, truth and charity.

Time for my Brother

I never had a brother, but I had hundreds of Brothers. An only child for seven years, I yearned for company to play or even fight with. My sister Kate arrived when I was seven and my sister Margaret when I was ten, and that was that.

At the age of 18 years and three days I joined the Novitiate of the Legion of Christ in Leopardstown, County Dublin. The Seminary was a green building built on land that had been sourced by Archbishop John McQuaid – now a controversial figure in political and ecclesial history, known to my father who was a big fan of the Archbishop who could be quite charming in private. The Legionary Novitiate may be the only green building to my knowledge in all of Ireland. The green tiled building, conceived to ‘blend in’, sticks out like a sore thumb as you drive along the M50 motorway at the Sandyford junction.

In 1969 I joined twenty other young men with a view to serving God in the Mexican Missions. Within an hour of joining we were advised that we should address each other as ‘Brother’. It became natural over the following two years of the Spiritual Formation Course (the Novitiate) to call each other ‘Brother’. So much so that when two of us were sent under cover in mufti on a ‘delicate’ mission to Madrid in 1971 to pretend that we were lay students attending UCD, we found it almost impossible not to call each other ‘Brother’ and once or twice we lapsed.

We lived a life of poverty chastity and obedience. Poverty meant having no possessions of one’s own – literally. We were all assigned jobs, Sacristan, Cook, Medical Officer, Farmer, among others. My favorite job was Receptionist because it entailed spending much of ones time in a little office at the front of the building where I could see all the comings and goings. I got to sleep in a little room beside the reception so as to be able to take phone calls that might sound in the night. This was in the days before phone extensions and mobile phones.

In the years after I left in 1976 I used to claim that my only possession was my watch – which was not strictly true. Stricly I had no watch. The watch I brought to the Seminary was given to young man called Thomas Price – ‘Brother’ Thomas Price – to give him his full religious name. Thomas had the toughest job of all. He was in charge of ‘time’. With the help of my watch he sounded the bell every time a new task was due. He rang the first bell rang at 5.50 am for Morning Prayer, followed at 6.00 for meditation, followed at 7.00 for Mass, followed at 7.30 for breakfast – in silence – and so on.

The Brother in charge of the Bell needed to be punctual and diligent. Thomas Price had those qualities and more. Over the following 41 years nearly all my companions left the Legion of Christ – but because we were never allowed discuss personal matters in the Seminary – our decisions to leave were made alone, without access to colleagues or family. Often when we left, our remaining colleagues were told we had moved 'to Mexico' or to another mission. That is what happened in my case. It was reported that I had left on a top secret mission to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico when in fact I was back in Dublin walking Dollymount Strand.

As a result, having been deprived of communication while inside the Legion, this nearly always continued afterwards – often for years. Many were so traumatized by the Legionary experience they chose not to contact others, no matter how well meaning. Purely by chance, some years ago I learned that Thomas had unsurprisingly left but surprisingly and sadly had died at a very young age. I was shocked and saddened. Thomas had been a gifted footballer. He hailed from the Liberties and I can still see his parents in my mind. Our parents were allowed to visit the seminary twice a year for an afternoon. I have pleasant if black and white memories of their reunions with Thomas from my vantage point in Reception.

Yesterday as I drove around Glenageary roundabout, thirty nine years later I got a call on my mobile phone from a friend in Amnesty International – where I had served as honorary treasurer for three year. In moving premises they had discovered a Bible donated to a Brother Thomas Price, LC (Legion of Christ) on the occasion of the Profession (Promises) in 1971.

Memories flooded back of the red headed Brother Thomas as he made his way along the polished Seminary floors in the early morning and how he glanced at his watch – my watch; memories of him playing football in the field which now houses Bewley's Hotel in Leopardstown, of working with him to harvest potatoes in the autumn of 1970 in the land that is now occupied by Central Park.

Coming up to our first Christmas in the Seminary, in December 1969 Brother Thomas dropped the watch on the marble floors and it smashed into many pieces. So that was the end to the only thing I had in the world. Those two years in Leopardstown and the five following years taught me a very privileged lesson – possessions don’t really matter as long as you have three decent meals a day and a roof over your head. Many in Dublin and in Mexico will not have those luxuries this Christmas.

I have undertaken to try to track down members of the Price family and return the ‘Amnesty’ Bible to the family of my 'Brother' – Thomas Price. So if anyone out there knows of someone related to a wonderful red headed young man (as he was in 1969), hailing from Cork Street in the Liberties, who played a mean game of football and who was never late in his life, just give me a call and we will try and offer the family a small momento and remember a life that, if short, was nevertheless heroic.

One of the pillars of legion in Spain, a major superior and head of the legion school in Madrid, Fr. Santiago Oriol, has publicly announced he is leaving the legion. As some of you might recall, the Oriol family is one of the wealthiest families in Spain, they come from nobility. There are at least 4 Oriol brothers who are (or were) legionaries. Santiago is the oldest and most influential of all. His brother Alfonso, also a legionary, was at the meeting and supported his decision. Most of the Fr. Santiago's community which he heads is following and leaving, too. He has invited the school's parents to reconsider pulling their children out of the school, and said he "doesn't know, love, or trust the legion anymore." A few years ago, the legion tried to force the Oriol brothers (and a 3gf) to surrender to the legion, right then and there, their inheritance. The youngest Oriol legionary wouldn't allow it and Nuestro Fraude himself made his life impossible. From another source I learned that Luis Garza had used the Oriol inheritance money, along with his own and his 3gf's inheritance money, to fund the legion's growth, promising them higher returns on their investment.

One of the Oriol legionaries, by sheer coincidence, once discovered Nuestro Fraude with one of his "families." This priest immediately confronted Nuestro Fraude and went to his superiors. He was hushed, of course, and ordered to say nothing. This was the beginning of the Oriol family's disenchantment with legion. Now, as these pillars of legion/regnum start abandoning ship, things will begin to unravel more quickly. At least for Spain, this is HUGE. Without the Oriol family, there would be no legion/regnum in Spain

In reading the tea leaves, it would seem as though the men are voting with their feet, dePaolis' good intentions notwithstanding...

Sometime around the early 90s, when legion was starting to grow by leaps and bounds, Luis Garza presented a business plan to some members of his extended family explaining that, given the growth of the Legion, they should invest in it, and that he'd offer them higher than standard returns.

To the money pool he raised from relatives, they added the Oriol's inheritance that the notorious Fr. Guerra, LC (as ordered by Nuestro Fraude) had successfully coerced from the Oriols to bequeath to legion before it was canonically legal or required for them to do so.

Luis Garza was successful in raising this capital and a lot of it has vanished due to the late misfortunes of Nuestro Fraude's empire. So the Oriols, as they leave the Nuestro Fraude's kingdom, will probably be left with NADA -- other than their dignity and decency.

Now that "vanishing" money could simply be the collapse of a Ponzi scheme or the siphoning away of real funds -- financial wizards are toying with the options even now. If everyone could take a deep breath and forget the money, perhaps we would remember the more important human capital. Don't mean to accuse the team of bad priorities (who knows what they're discussing behind closed doors?) but scandal costs more in the long run than real integrity. Surely they know that by now.

When no longer convenient for the cause, Legionary webpages or forums disappear without explanation. The same has happened to the members from time to time.

We are all familiar with the way many Legionaries and Regnum Christi members have departed the organization, "like a thief in the night", while the other members, the 'community', their companions are asleep.

Or members are moved quickly from one country/continent to another, all part of the control and disempowerment strategies created by their "Nuestro Padre", the king of deceit.

Occasionally, a member "disappears off the face of the map" or goes "M.I.A" in such a way that not even his/her family members knows where s/he is

Maciel used the Quintana Roo Mission in the Yucatan Peninsula as a place of exile for dissident members;
he also sent people to Gabon, such as Jack Keogh can testify
he used Australia as a place to unload "problematic" members
Brazil is the latest place for Legionaries to be put out of sight and slowly disappear into oblivion

Has anyone thought about the damage that has been done to the young men and women who were part of this group? The order has clear signs of a cult mentality. My experiences with people who have been involved with cults is that they are almost permanently damaged. Probably because they are people who are drawn to such extreme groups, they may respond extremely. They could be lost to the Church or harbor deep resentments toward Church authority and structure. That would be a true shame! But what is to be done? Would they ever be able to fit in with typical parochial and diocesan situations? I don't envy Pope Benedict in this. He will need the wisdom of Solomon and then some!

I have mentioned the frustration that I experience in the legion and how it has been an obstacle to my fulfillment. Everyone needs to feel fulfilled.

Every once in a while, I hit the “Next Blog>>” button on the top of my blog, and most times it brings me to family blogs, photos of babies, husbands and wives. You don’t find blogs extolling the joys of a dysfunctional family, how great it is to be separated or divorced, and what a joy that my child doesn’t have a father. No one willingly wants that – that brings unhappiness.

No one feels happy in something that’s not right. But when the family is working well, where there is true love, you can see how fulfilled they are. Family makes us love. If we don’t love we are miserable. And to love properly you have to be able to express love, affection, kindness, mercy and being forgiven. The dynamic of the family is the dynamic of the Church.

My family for the past 24 years (not my natural family, of course) has been dysfunctional. And that brings frustration. I haven’t been able to express in a healthy way all God has given me and all that he has been asking me to be. There has been a constant wanting to live behind a mask, to be false, to put on a way of being that is not me. I ...

Given their pathological religiosity and curiously durable naivety, it's no wonder Americans have made their country the world capital of cults. There are now more than 5000 cult groups in the US, their members numbering between 10 million and 15 million. This powerful documentary looks at just one group, the Mountain Rock Church, and the chaos it wreaks in the lives of four families.

Based in South Carolina, the church is run by Pastor Raimund Melz, a whip-thin, German-born preacher who, with his wife Deborah, exerts almost complete control over followers. Melz bills himself as an apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher, the only source of truth and the sole road to salvation.

But he has also become the centre of his acolytes' temporal world. Having built their homes in the church compound, called The Heritage, church members hand them over to Melz (on orders from the Lord, naturally), from whom they must then rent them back. Emptied out by fear and filled back up with guilt, church members are, in effect, reduced to infantilism, unable to think or act for themselves. “You have to have him [Melz] point out the sin,” former follower Tonya Rogers says, “because you're a dumb baby, you're a dumb sheep . . . so he has to be the one, 'cause he hears from God.”

Breaking away is akin to getting off heroin; a long, wrenchingly painful journey that has been captured artfully by filmmaker Ondi Timoner. (Interestingly, Timoner's 2004 rock'n'roll doco, DiG!, dealt in part with singer Anton Newcombe and the seemingly maniacal control he had over his band members in the Brian Jonestown Massacre.) The film also points out the changing dynamic of cults, from the huge, Moonie-type groups of the 1970s to smaller units led and supported by ostensibly “normal” people.

This is an opportunity to meet and participate with other former members of cults or high-demand groups. Our goal is to provide a safe, respectful environment in which participants may gain mutual support, share perceptions, and learn from each other. We hope to focus on typical post-cult aftereffects and responses, the process of recovery and personal development, strategies and successes for a creating a life of one's own making. While this is not a therapy group, it may be therapeutic.

The session will begin with brief introductions, followed by an open discussion in which participants can expand upon anything previously stated, comment on emerging thoughts and feelings, and address relevant issues.

The facilitators, Colleen Russell and Janja Lalich, expect a lively, interactive, and in-depth exploration of issues raised by participants, such as trust; relationships and communication; healthy group functioning; magical thinking; disconfirming inaccurate, self-limiting beliefs internalized from cult ideologies; boundaries and saying "no"; loss and grief; anger and other emotions; critical-thinking skills; connecting to society-at-large; self-acceptance; post-traumatic stress; family of origin issues; personal accomplishments and goals.

Colleen Russell, L.M.F.T., is an experienced psychotherapist and a Certified Group Psychotherapist. In the 1970s she was a "higher initiate" and area representative of an Eastern/New Age cult. Ms. Russell facilitates an on-going group for former members, now in its eighth year, and she endeavors to support healthy as opposed to cultic group functioning and dynamics. In addition to her general therapy practice with individuals, couples, and families, she specializes in cult education and recovery.

Janja Lalich, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology at California State, University, Chico. In the 1970s and '80s she was a high-ranking member of a San Francisco-based political cult. Since leaving the cult in 1986, Dr. Lalich has become one of the nation's leading experts on cult phenomena, including cult indoctrination and its effects and recovery from such experiences. In addition to her own works, she coauthored two books with the late Dr. Margaret Singer. Dr. Lalich facilitated former member support groups for many years in the San Francisco Bay Area and has worked with many individuals and families affected by cults.

Ce jour là, bien que préparé à l’événement par des mois de crise spirituelle, tout va très vite. Un saut discret au centre ville une après-midi pour quelques courses vestimentaires avec l’un d’entre eux. Puis tout se passe dans la discrétion la plus totale, pour que, comme la tradition l’a établi dans ces cas là à la Légion, mon petit drame personnel ne vienne pas perturber la fidélité des autres.

Pour le moment, je prends garde de ne pas être vu ‘en civil’ et je descends furtivement les escaliers de service, direction l’aéroport. Mes deux supérieurs m’attendent au garage. Après un passage furtif au Macdonald histoire de décrisper l’atmosphère, c’est le départ, une nouvelle vie commence.

Le moment viendra bien où mes frères de communauté s’en rendront compte et je sais déjà que les formules toutes faites colmateront la brèche: « ¡se fue! » (il est parti!) ou « ¡ya no esta! ») « il n’est plus là! » ou encore (« ¡no era su camino! ») « ce n’était pas son chemin! ». Ces phrases pratiques permettront de ne pas aller plus loin sur la question si des interrogations surgissent à mon sujet.

My departure took place at the proper time, and in a most completely providential manner.( I see that now). My experience was not like yours. I must say in fairness to the movement, that I left in peace, in discernment made with much wisdom, together with a lay Chilean psychologist, and the proper conscrated director ( to whom I am very thankful) forbid me to speak with her [the female director] and IT IS SHE WHO RECOMMENDED THE PSYCHOLOGOST SO SHE NOT TO INFLUENCE ME AND TO ALLOW ME TOTAL FREEDOM. I left in December 2005 and here I am married and very happy!!! The reason for my departure was not the problem with MACIEL, WHO WAS STILL IN THE SHADOWS,but an existential and personal aspect which always troubled me

I wanted to leave here however humbly my little testimony because I received a lot from the Legion and from the movement since age 13 and I was lucky never to have seen the behavior of “Maciel’s type” in any LC or consecrated person that I knew, but that didn’t stop me from asking since I found out the news, that I asked everyone: Father Alvaro, Maleny, Malen,the truth and nothing but the truth, clarity, firmness, the immediate request for forgivness of the victims, and that I received not one single personal response to any of my correspondance.. No problem. I will continue to write and ask for clarity, honesty, truthfulness ESPECIALLY WITH THE CONSECRATED MEMBERS AND LEGIONARIES STILL INSIDE!!! I’m leaving more because the manner in which the Legion has handled the revelations since the Vatican took action against Fr. Maciel in 2006 has left me often frustrated and totally distracted.

Dear Regnum Christi Friends,
With my greetings for a very happy New Year for 2010 and assurance of my continued prayers and Masses for you and your families, I have some news to pass on to you.
I’m writing to inform you that after 29 years, I will be leaving the Legionaries of Christ and will apply to become a priest of the Archdiocese of New York.
I leave with a heavy heart and as you can imagine, it is a very sad experience for me. But after long conversations and correspondence with superiors, and after having consulted with prudent and widely respected priests, I believe in my conscience it is the right thing to do.
The news of the various scandals regarding Fr. Maciel was truly shocking and horrendous for us and the whole the Church. In dealing with them I have tried my best to be honest and candid whenever I have spoken to you all about them and never knowingly misled anyone. I have believed that a rigorously honest approach to this terrible series of events was the only way to proceed. Furthermore, I felt that if done so, and counting on the help of the Holy See, it could even lead to true healing and renewal for the Legion and the Movement, even in spite of the truly serious questions it raises about the charism of the congregation.

I’m leaving more because the manner in which the Legion has handled the revelations since the Vatican took action against Fr. Maciel in 2006 has left me often frustrated and totally distracted.

I’ve tried my best to communicate with the superiors over this past year, and they have been gracious and generous taking the time to listen. I believe I have had the opportunity to get my point of view across to them.
I have participated extensively in the Apostolic Visitation and gave my best input to Abp. Chaput on multiple occasions. He has been gracious, fair and objective. I feel I have done all I can in that regard.

My conclusion is that the reforms needed in the Legion (which the scandals have made clear) simply won’t happen in the foreseeable future with the current leadership’s approach to the matter.

I hope and pray the Apostolic Visitation somehow does bring about the needed changes, and remain ready to do whatever I can to help. But anything the Holy See can do depends also on the willingness of the Legion to examine itself and work on its own problems. Even in the most optimistic of scenarios, reform will take a great deal of time and will continue to be a very absorbing and frustrating experience. I don’t want to live my priesthood in frustration, but serve the Church as best I can in another capacity.
Nothing I have said should be understood to take away in the least the gratitude I feel for all the good I have received from the Legion over these many years. There are so many things about the Legion and the Movement that are extraordinarily unique and wonderful. It has been a privilege to serve among so many talented and holy brothers and priests, who have treated me with such kindness and charity. There are so many treasured memories and many fruitful apostolic works I have had the privilege to be associated with, as well as generous and loving lay people who have always edified me with their example of faith and love. Those are true blessings from God for which I will always be grateful.
I hope to keep in touch and I encourage you all to continue in your own vocation, attentive to the Holy Spirit and growing every day in love for the Lord and his will in your life. I will have you and your families very close in my prayers and Masses.

15 years ago I left the Regnum Christi consecrated ladies but I am still angry about the way I was treated.

After leaving I was left without any assistance of any kind, although I needed counseling because the whole RC experience was quite traumatic.

Naturally, I also had some very special moments and I am still grateful for all the spiritual help I received.

At the moment I feel ok and have a steady job. I still have days when I feel depressed thinking of the deceit I suffered in the RC. I have other companions who left about the same time but they are still friendly with the Legionaries and they won’t let me criticize the Legion or the Regnum .

Fr. Thomas Maher, Gateway, Leaves Legion

Image of Fr. Maher. He tells us he is not escaping. He is leaving through the main door, proudly leaving behind 23 years in the Legion to go to a parish; a move sanctioned by his superiors, he tells us.

Fr. Maher's message to Gateway Academy families contains a typo, "pray" instead of "prayer". Was he in a hurry, under stress...? He says he is still a Legionary. But he will not be living in a LC religious community. So will he still be a religious without being in a religious community? Is he taking a leave of absense from the Legion, officially remaining a member?. He still sounds like a Legionary, because of this unclear double talk. But let's give him time to find his senses.

Question: is this the same diocese that accepted Fr. Stephen Fichter exLC many years ago.

Successfully transitioning Fr. Stephen Fichter Publishes with America

With great pleasure I have learned that former Legionary of Christ priest, Stephen Fichter, has published an excellent article with America magazine, When Priests leave the Church. Kudos, Stephen.

Fr. Stephen is one of those Legionaries who have made an successful treansition to the diocesan priesthood, thus setting an example, giving hope and modelling for the many others who are leaving and will leave. Some will want to continue in the priesthood and/or religious life. It can be done. Do not believe the horror stories you are told while still in. There are many bishops who need good priests, and many Catholics who need good pastors. Being bilingual/bicultural makes you more marketable...

Exiting members need time to adjust to life outside the cult but transition to the priesthood, to the religious life, to marriage and to single life can be achieved. We are all good folks, from good families, who idealistically entered a very dysfunctional family. There is plenty of life, healthy life, outside the Legion and the Regnum.

I hope that is what the present Vatican Investigation will emphatically state.

Many left many years ago

Just found out that Fr. Neftali Sanchez (above, left), recruited as a child by Nuestro Padre Maciel, recently celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a priest in the diocese of Morelia. One of the handpicked very first group of children recuited by the Founder, Neftali was ordained in the 1960'. He was sent to be the first Legionary priest in Ireland and to minister to the postulants -as I describe in my memoir, Our Father [Maciel] who art in bed.

As so often happens in the Legion, he 'disappeared' not long afterwards never to be mentioned or heard of again in our communities. He fell into the black hole of the unfaithful departed. Jose Barba caught up with him again in Morelia, his home diocese, years later. Neftali was happily teaching at a university and performing his pastoral duties.

When Fr. Maciel's autobiography "Christ is my Life" was a bestseller

The title was clearly inspired by the Pauline phrase "For me to live is Christ", which Fr. Maciel had meditated on long and hard -sometimes when he was long and hard- and he liked the ring of that phrase. According to his autobiograpy, or interviews given to Regnum Christi member independent reporters, or the collection of lapidary phrases from Fr. Maciel's 1.5 million dollar letters, Cartas de Nuestro Padre, made to appear like answers in an interview, Fr. Maciel had assimilated the Pauline expression into his daily life, into his bloodstream, into the marrow of his bones...
