Hurrah for the Authentic Regnum Christi Consecrated

A Shout of Praise for the Authentic Ones Inside the Regnum Christi

Nieves' very castilian title below betrays her Spanish, or should I say Andalusian?, background

Yesterday a companion who remains in the Regnum Christi wrote me and asked me to please write something positive about those who continue "inside". I understand. It is not easy to carry on, fighting for renewal, when the majority does not believe that such is going to happen.
I want to share her reflections. I believe it is only fair to try to understand that option because respect is the basis for dialog.
There are many who stay inside motivated by the hope that by means of their lives change will happen in the Third Level Regnum Christi [consecrated] way of life.
It is not easy because it seems that everything goes so slow; but they want to persevere. Cardinal DePaolis already spoke of a healthy autonomy, and they are hoping that this will happen.

I know that some some "teams" try to live with more freedom and sincerity, they speak to each other, they try to carry out their apostolate trying to do the most good to others. There are financial problems that they try to live through bravely and that this brings with real hardship.
God, more than anyone else, knows of the sincerity of their efforts and He will reward them.
None of us really knows what is going to happen. Soon there will be elections held for the General Director ['Responsable General'] and her counselors. Its a first step. There is still nothing worked out regarding Administrative autonomy which is necessary for there to be real autonomy; there is nothing yet about aposotolate autonomy. It is very complex but I know that they want to put in all the necessary effort, taking the steps they are allowed.
In my opinion it is a sign of authenticity how they are acting according to what they see. To make decisions based on others' experiences would not be a good way to go.
There are many issues still undefined from a divine perspective: what charism will be lived, what will be their way of life, what will be their specific apostolate, how to repair the harm which we may have done unwittingly...

I trust they will take the bull by the horns, with charity and truth; that they lay their cards on the table, trusting in God, with new rules.
They see their lives passing by on their Way to Calvary, and they feel that as consecrated they have to follow in the footsteps of the Suffering Christ. For them, the ones that that follow what they see, my respect and my prayer.
I encourage all of them to be faithful to their conscience, living openly in truth, entering into dialog with other realities as christian women that seek unity with their brothers and sisters in the Church. In the degree that they are courageous, in the face of God, as I believe many are, perhaps they will find the renewal they desire, and a clean sprout will be born at the service of the local diocesan Church.
It is only just to acknowledge the good works that each individual carries out and not criticize people without knowing their motives. Only God can do that.
May He bless them always and make each one of them a bastion of charity and truth which will lead to the creation of a new work, really from God.
I beg pardon if my writing has hurt anyone. They know that we can have different opinions, make different decisions, but that we want to live a new charity, sincere, and full of respect.

Nieves Garcia.

"Give me hell, because I don't want this heaven!"

Rebecca Musser, former polygamist sect wife, speaks out

Musser played a major role in putting Jeffs and other FLDS leaders behind bars

BY NINA MANDELL / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Friday, April 13, 2012
A former polygamist sect wife who played a major role in putting Fundamentalist LDS leader Warren Jeffs behind bars spoke outside of the courtroom this week for the first time.
Rebecca Musser, who became one of Rulon Jeffs’ 65 wives at the age of 19, said she lived in a constant state of fear and misery from the time she was given away to the 85-year-old man by her father until the time she escaped after his death.
“My father sold my innocence,” Musser told a group of women at an event in Salt Lake City called Overcoming Obstacles, the Deseret News reported. “My life there was a constant state of fear, unknown ... silence.”
She said she had been told to always obey her husband and was never given the option of saying no to his sexual advances, despite the enormous age difference.
In 2002, seven years after they were married, Rulon Jeffs died and Musser made a decision to run away.
“After seven years of continual sexual violations, I’d had enough,” she said, according to the report. Though she had been taught to be obedient for her entire life, she said: “Give me hell, because I don’t want this heaven.”
Once she escaped, Musser found a difficult life on the outside, but also a new sense of freedom. She cut her hair for the first time, and slowly learned how to fit in.
“It was a brutal transition at best,” she said, according to the newspaper.
She had a hard time leaving her little sister and the other women in the sect behind and by 2007 became one of the main witnesses for prosecutors and police who were working to end the underage marriage and sexual abuse in the sect.
She served as a witness against Warren Jeffs, who became the sect’s new leader after his father died, and helped get him convicted on rape charges.
“I could not deny those I’d left behind,” she said, according to the newspaper.
Outside of the police station and the courtroom, Musser has avoided telling her story until the trials finished.
The last of those men, Wendell Loy Nielsen, was found guilty of three counts of polygamy late last month.
He faces up to 10 years in prison.

Good Fruits and Bad Fruits of the Legion/Regnum

Here is a rough translation from the Spanish from Nieves Garcia's blog, granitosdeverdad [little grains of truth], listed under my related blogs

We were all surprised by the news about Maciel. The surprise immediately turned into questioning. So therefore the work he founded is bad? The fruits that we see are good. It is true, there are many good fruits that one cannot, should not, deny. I will share a few ideas that helped me understand this "mystery".

 1. Maciel fooled a lot of people by leading a double life. Those good people, though deceived, have tried to do good with good intentions, and God has blessed them. He did not bless Maciel.

2. God is the only one that can get good out of the evel that human will has caused. God does not want evil, he allows the evil because he respects our freedom. He did not want Nazi concentration camps; they were the fruit of human freedom. But God tried to get some good out of every victim. Saint Maximilian Kolbe was an example of that. God did not want his suffering but gave him the strength of martyrdom.
God has been able to get good fruits from the Legion and Regnum Christ and this does no mean that he chose a bad instrument. God does not chose evil. He respects human freedom.
3. Once truth comes to light, it behooved us to review our way of life. When we did this, many of us realized that we, too, had done harm to others. Hundreds of good fruits do not justify bad fruits. We are human beings, we are not things, vegetables, "sacks of potatoes" . To justify evil by the amount of good fruits produced is to accept evil as a means to a good end.

I lived 27 years in this institution. I, too, have done harm to others without wanting to. And I ask forgiveness. But I cannot continue to deceive. What I want is for us to become aware, ask forgiveness, and open ourselves to the grace of conversion. We have to change. People are not numbers or the fruits of my harvest; they are human beings loved for who they are by God, and they deserve total respect. It is about service, not about appearances. God knows the reality: "Don't let you left hand know the [good] works your right hand is doing." Only in a state of humility will God bless those whose love and serve others unselfishly.
There have been good fruits. Great! But we should never do harm to anyone, ever; much less in the name of God.

Nieves Garcia.
==========================

Somos personas, no somos "tomates o zanahorias".

Though shalt not Communicate with Totus Tuus -Outsiders!

that is the gist of part of a letter from the new director of the Regnum Christi' consecrated women, according to outsider recently insider Nieves Garcia. Here is the translation of her latest blog posting:

"I just read a letter that Fr. Montan sent to the consecrated member of the Regnum Christi. The seventh point caught my attention, where he states that the Regnum Christi has a charism, an identity and a spirituality all its own and therefore he "invites" members not to have contact with [the splinter group approved by a Chilean archbishop and the pope] Totus Tuus" [composed of former RC members disenchanted with it and with the Vatican's version of reform.]

The quote is as follows:

"The Regnum Christi 3rd degree has its own identity, charism, spirituality and mission defined in its Statutes. Without laying aside the bonds of prayer and friendship, the consecrated members of RC, in this precise historical moment, will avoid meeting with or accepting invitations to meetings which would demonstrate more ambiguity than identity."

Several questions come to mind which I would like someone to answer:
1.What is the Regnum Christi's identity and charism? Nobody has been able to explain that to me. In principle, we are in the "enlightment" stage trying to discover them, and therefore to affirm the existence of a charism is to deny the process of discovery.
2. And if such a charism and identity existed what is the problem with visiting with a member of another association, also belonging to the Church? It's as if a member of the Focolarini were prohibited from visiting a Capuchin friar.
3. How can we live charity -Christ's mandate above all other human mandates- if you are forbidden from visiting with another human person?

In a word, if obedience is imposed without reason, we are still demanding a submission of the will which God never wanted.
What is beautiful about the Church is that we are all one big family where many kinds of seeds can grow. Unity was and is Benedict XVI's great concern. Hopefully our horizon will be much wider than the limits of our own security.

Nieves Garcia

....
life after rc gives us the background regarding this Fr. Montan:

New directors for Third Degree

The Delegate's letter has been published in English concerning the two new directors: Agostino Montan, SC will be in charge of the 3 Degree Female (he already oversees the Ordo Virginum in Rome), and Fr Ghirlanda, SJ for the 3 Degree Men [consecrated]
At first glance, this seems like the best news yet since the Visitation. The local "consecrated" men and women will still report to their local LC's, but any Legionaries overseeing them will ultimately have to answer to the two directors, who have previously shown themselves to be solid men who understand authentic Religious life.

Why do they stay in the Regnum Christi?

Nieves Garcia gives us her testimony
-she left recently, after 27 years inside-
She is in transition to a world without the norms, charism, and support of the Regnum Christi
and its spiritual directors =superiors.

For the Heart of Christ there are no persons "inside" or "outside", just people, hearts to be loved and saved.

I met the ECYD (the RC recruitment and grooming group) in 1976. And I took my promises in 1984. For 27 years I  lived my consecration inside the Regnum Christi. Now I live it alone in the Church; essentially the same thing, only the form has changed. That's the way Jesus wants it.

I love all those that continue "inside" and I try to understand them. When someone asks me "Why do they stay in?" I don't know what to say, because each one has their motives and all those motives are valid in the sight of God. We should respect them; that is the beginning of Charity.

There are those who stay in with their eyes wide open to what is happening around them because they have the hope that renewal will happen. Thank you for your testimony of trust in God.
Others do not know what is going on, and are not able to grasp the full truth. They trust that this hurricane will pass, though they wonder when. Thank you for your faithful wait.
There are others who doubt or are afraid, but they don't know what to do or to whom to go for help. They suffer in silence and pray for light. Thank you for your offering of suffering.
Some stay in out of love for their companions, to help them, support them, take care of them, struggling at their side so they don't lose their health, faith, or vocations. Thank you for being Good Samaritans.
What I am sure of is that those who are "inside" have their gaze fixed on Church leaders, they pray for them so that these men of the Church will enlighten them and guide them.

I pray to God that those who have the responsibility before Heaven for these souls do not let them down, that they never put the institution before the individuals because Jesus was ever the Good Shepherd and he searched for each lost sheep, and never kicked it out of the pen. Maybe not all understand but I affirm I love them with all my heart and that we should continue to believe in love because where there is love, there and only there, is God.

RC consecrated 1984-2011

[that was the year the blogger left, after 23 years in the Legion]

"You are not welcome here. Pick up your belongings"

COME AND PICK UP YOUR SUITCASE
by Nieves Garcia

Today I was witness. (freely translated from the original Spanish by blogger)

I first met my friend in 1978. She was one of the founders of ECYD in one of the Spanish Provinces. She became a 'consecrated" in 1986, without her parents' permission, something that was very hard for her for a long time.
After twenty five years she entered a period of discernment. With her (female) director's permission she went to Cordoba [Spain] to do spiritual exercises with some of the members of the new "Totus Tuus" group. Today she got a call from her director: "You can come back and pick up your suitcase, but you can't sleep [in the residence], or be around the center."
I saw her cry like a little girl.
She is 46.
After, she went over to a statue of the Blessed Virgin, renewed her consecration and gave thanks to God for her love and fidelity. With a smile on her face, she told us "I give thanks to God."
I make no judgment. I only tell the truth. Today I have been a witness.

Hoy he sido testigo.
Yo he sido testigo hoy

340 Consecrated Leave Regnum Christi in 3 years, Why? asks former member, Nieves Garcia

Nieves Garcia

Finally, a short and to the point statement by a former member of the Regnum Christi "consecrated Srtas".
See the blog

CONTENT/STATEMENT:

During the last 3 years 340 'Consecrated' (women) left the Regnum Christi (Movement founded by Fr. Marcial Maciel who also founded the Legion of Christ). I have their names, because each one of them is a person. Many people ask "Why?"
It is simplistic to say they left because of the Maciel scandal. Maybe that was the trigger but there are more reasons.
Some discovered they never had a vocation because there is never any real discernment before entering; when they did discernment with an outsider, they realized that they had mistaken generosity for vocation. Thanks for being so generous.
Others became sick physically and psychologically because the life style is really not balanced and harms the person. Women should not live like men because if they do they will get sick. That's the way it was. Thanks for your suffering accepted in silence and out of love.
Others began asking for the whole truth and they got half truths or lies. When they finally found the truth they realized that the truth will make you free, and they chose the truth.
Many hoped and hope in the Church's help to bring about a real renewal of their life style and their consecration. They studied the teaching of the Church, they contributed, but nothing happened, and so they decided to be faithful to what the Church calls religious consecration. Thanks for their courage.
The first group did not leave because they wanted to; they were told
" You are dispensed from your promises.
-But I did not asked to be dispensed!
-It doesn't matter. Fr. Alvaro has signed the dispensations."
So they only had time to pick up their things and go out into the world after 30 years of cloistered consecrated life. But they left trusting in God and being faithful to Him.  Thanks for your authenticity and faith.
Every sister that suffers and falls along the way is an invitation from God to think what needs to be changed so that the Movements' much vaunted charity stops being a word and starts being a reality.
Thanks to all of you who are struggling to to make love real and have chosen another path in order to keep loving.
Nieves Garcia.
